About this quiz

The genuinely surprising thing about taking 5th-grade trivia as an adult is how much you've forgotten — and how much of what you forgot, you used to know cold. This eight-question quiz pulls from the core subjects an American 10-year-old is expected to know: a math question, a science question, geography, US history, English grammar, and a few that bridge across. It isn't designed to embarrass you. It's designed to remind you that some of the foundational stuff slips quietly out of your head when you stop using it.

    Smarter Than a 5th Grader

You actually still know your foundational stuff. The math, the grammar, the basic geography — none of it has slipped, and you probably read enough or work in fields adjacent enough that the early-school curriculum stays warm. The kind of person who could help with a niece's homework without quietly googling under the table.

    Tied with a 5th Grader

You remember enough to feel okay, miss enough to feel old. Some categories are crisp (probably the ones that came up in your work or hobbies) and others are noticeably dusty. That's normal — adult brains de-prioritize what they don't use. The fun is in noticing which corners of your education actually stuck and which ones drifted away.

    Beaten by a 5th Grader

The 5th-grade curriculum has moved on without you, and that's fine — most of what you've forgotten, you don't actually need in daily life. The good news is that this stuff is surprisingly fun to relearn as an adult, and the foundational concepts make more sense at 35 than they did at 10. Pick up a Khan Academy course on whatever surprised you most.
