Eight awareness questions on Sterile Processing for the CRCST credential. A primer — not a full practice exam.

Trivia

About this quiz

The CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) is the foundational credential for sterile processing technicians in hospitals — the people who clean, decontaminate, sterilize, and inventory the instruments surgical teams depend on. This eight-question awareness quiz is a primer, not a full practice exam. The real CRCST test has 150 questions across decontamination, sterilization, instrumentation, and more. Use the HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) textbook and 400 hours of supervised hands-on experience for actual certification prep.

What you'll discover

    On Track

You have a working grasp of the fundamentals. Keep going with the HSPA Central Service Technical Manual — that's the canonical text — and start logging your 400 hours of hands-on experience if you haven't already. The full CRCST exam expects depth on each chapter, so don't shortcut the manual just because you can pass an 8-question quiz.

    Building Foundation

You know some of the basics. The gaps are probably in specific sterilization parameters (temperature, time, pressure) or the difference between decontamination and high-level disinfection. Reread the relevant HSPA manual chapters and do practice questions in small batches. The CRCST exam rewards spaced repetition more than cramming.

    Just Starting

You're at the start of your CRCST journey. That's a fine place to be — most candidates begin with no background and successfully credential within 6-12 months. Get the HSPA Central Service Technical Manual, start with chapter 1, and plan on roughly 200-300 hours of study plus the required 400 hours of clinical experience.
